My little boy was so excited to start school on Monday morning! He was awake, bright eyed, at 6:30! He was chomping at the bit to get to school, and if he had his way we would have been there at 6:35.
The morning went very smooth, and once we checked out his new classroom, he was busy visiting with his friends.
I spotted the vice principal on the playground, and had a conversation with him regarding some paperwork we had filled out for our inter-district transfer. Then, I asked him where I was supposed to pick up Zach, since last year they were excused after lunch in the cafeteria. I asked if I picked him up at the 'normal' time, and he responded: "Yes, normal time."
I spoke with his teacher, and had mentioned I hadn't got any paperwork during the summer for the school schedule. She said she would be sending it home with their paperwork that day, including the school year calendar...
Fabulous!
Zach gave me a little wave, and he marched into his new classroom. I was so happy that he was being such a trooper!
Kyle and I spent the day at home- he played on the computer, and I got a ton of chores done. I set the timer on the stove to give me a 30 minute warning- so I could get Kyle ready and we made it back to the school with PLENTY of time to spare.
I was getting a snack and juice ready when the phone rang. The caller i.d. said it was Zach's school!! Immediately my mind went to the worst case scenario- I couldn't believe something was wrong on the first day of school!
However, to my surprise... it wasn't Zach in trouble... it was ME!
"Mrs. Baer, were you aware that today was a minimum day... and Zach was ready to be picked up 30 minutes ago?"
Ummm... NO! Ugh, what? What do you mean the first day is a minimum day?
"I don't know what to tell you, we have it posted everywhere."
Oh my gosh, I'll be right there.
One heart attack and 17 minutes later, Kyle and I arrived at the school to pick up Zach. I found in the BOTTOM corner of ONE bulletin board was a notice that there was a minimum day on Mon., Tues., and Wed. Everywhere? Whatever...
Of course, Zach had a fabulous day! He loved his teacher, and thought his new class was going to be so much fun. He wasn't even mad that "Mom forgot him at school." Ugh.
Tuesday afternoon, not only was I on time... I was there with a spring in my step. All the parents, including a local police officer, were there to pick up their cute little first graders. So imagine my HORROR when Zach ran up to me, very loudly saying:
"Awww... Thanks Mom for not forgetting me again today!"
Way to go fruit of my loins. I have officially been dubbed the worst parent in the world on the second day of school.
Oh well, at least all I can do is go up from here, right? ;)
